Registration of Industries in the Matanza-Riachuelo Basin

The Supreme Court requested to the authority of the Matanza-Riachuelo Basin, (“ACUMAR”), the Federal Government and the authorities of the Province and of the City ofBuenos Aires to report, jointly and in a single filing, the compliance status of each of the items included in the judgment issued on July 8, 2008 in the case "Mendoza". The requested report was submitted by ACUMAR on last April 27th.

With respect to the measures taken by ACUMAR, it should be noted that second and third category industries based in the Matanza-Riachuelo Basin in the Province of Buenos Aires (which includes the municipalities of Lanús, Avellaneda, Lomas de Zamora, Esteban Echeverría, La Matanza, Ezeiza, Cañuelas, Almirante Brown, Moron, Merlo, Marcos Paz, Presidente Perón, San Vicente and General Las Heras) as well as industries based in the City of Buenos Aires and classified as “with relevant environmental impact”, must register in the Registry of Matanza-Riachuelo Basin Industries before June 26, 2010.

Said Registry, established by Resolution N° 7/2009 issued by ACUMAR includes both industrial activities and comparable service activities. On the other hand, ACUMAR may request the registration of other industries as it may deem appropriate.

Failure to register as of the mentioned deadline will empower the Basin Authority to apply sanctions to the offender, including  a warning and the request to rectify the situation within 15 days.
